The maths
Pip value = pip size x contract size x lots x quote-to-USD rate
On pairs quoted in USD the last term is 1, so the value never moves. On USD/JPY, USD/CHF and USD/CAD the pip is earned in the quote currency and has to be converted back.
Worked example
One pip on one standard lot of EUR/USD is 10 USD. The same pip on USD/JPY at 151.20 is 6.61 USD, because the 1,000 yen it earns converts at the current rate.
How much is one pip in dollars?
On a standard lot of a USD-quoted major it is 10 USD, on a mini lot 1 USD and on a micro lot 0.10 USD. Anything quoted in another currency has to be converted first.
Why does the yen pair keep changing?
A pip on USD/JPY is 0.01, which earns 1,000 yen per standard lot. What those yen are worth in dollars depends on where USD/JPY is trading.
What is a pip on gold?
A pip on XAU/USD is 0.01 and a standard lot is 100 ounces, so one pip is 1 USD. A one dollar move in the gold price is 100 pips.
